TRAVERTINE
Travertine
Travertine is a terrestrial sedimentary rock formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate at the start of the hot spring or in a limestone cave and its by-product is what structures such as stalagmites and stalactites are composed of. Travertine is recognized by its distinct porous characteristic, and comes in an array of colours, from grey to beige to rust.
Travertine is quarried in Italy, Turkey, Iran, Mexico and Peru, but Travertine is also found in America and Croatia, forming the basis of national parks such as Yellowstone National Park in the U.S.A.
Historically, the Romans have used travertine for building temples, churches, monuments, bath houses and the most famous amphitheatre in the world and the largest building in the world predominately made of travertine, the Colosseum as is St Peters at the Vatican.
