GRANITE
Granite
Granite is an igneous stone formed when magma cools over millions of years, combining with large portions of quarts and feldspar accompanied by fragments of various other minerals, creating the classic dappled appearance of granite. This granular visual texture creates a pointillist effect, additionally granite also possess flowing veins which can be used to direct the viewer’s eye around a space.
Granite can be found in numerous, magnificent natural formations such as the Yosemite Valley and the Pink Granite Coast, but this material is also found in ancient man made structures; like the sarcophagus made of “Red Aswan Granite” contained in the Great Pyramid of Giza to Rajaraja Chola I’s temple made entirely of granite in Tanjore, India. Most famously, granite is an integral part of the Roman language of monumental architecture and these structures still stand today due to the process of case-hardening where granite becomes harder with age.
Granite can be found all over the Earth, however the most exotic looking granite derives from Brazil, India, China, Finland, South Africa and North America. Granite is extracted via cutting the material whilst it is still in the Earth, and then digging around the blocks to free the granite. Peraway Marble (Aust) Pty Ltd provides granite that can be used for bench tops, backsplashes, interior and exterior wall cladding, pavement and a variety of other decorative uses. Granite is an exemplary material, it’s hard enough to resist abrasion, strong enough to support significant weight, steadfast enough to withstand weathering and accepts a brilliant polish. Granite can also be diamond rubbed, honed, exfoliated and brushed, with each process creating a different end result.
