Onyx

Onyx marble is composed of calcite and is formed in caves in countries such as the Middle East, North Africa and South America. The process of onyx marble formation occurs when water dripping from stalactites and stalagmites evaporates, leaving deposits of calcium carbonate and various other minerals producing bands, swirls and dots. Onyx marble can also come with veins or parallel lines creating a layered effect. Interestingly, due to the transparent nature of onyx, it can be illuminated by the sun or backlit and made as a feature piece, casting a soft glow of the onyx’s colour – which include blue, red, orange, brown, green and pink.
